The Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) for Android is a free security scanner that allows a user to scan their mobile device and detect any vulnerable programs installed.

Patching insecure programs helps safeguard your data and mobile device against cybercriminals, who are increasingly targeting private PCs and mobile devices. Their entry points are vulnerabilities in popular programs, which are exploited and used as a gateway to compromise a mobile device and access confidential data. Attacks exploiting vulnerable programs and plugins are often not blocked by traditional antivirus applications.

Timely patching is the only solution to these types of attacks. Patches are offered free of charge by most software vendors; however, finding all of these patches is tedious and time-consuming. The Secunia PSI removes the complexity of this task and helps you stay secure, so that you can shop, bank, and socialize online, safely.

The Secunia PSI works by using the Android API (official API libraries) to collect information about the installed applications. These files contain non-specific meta information provided by the software vendor. This data is the same for all users and originates from the installed programs on your device - never from their configuration.

After examining all the programs on your mobile device, the collected data is sent to Secunia's servers, which match the data against the Secunia File Signatures engine to determine the exact applications installed on your device.

The Secunia PSI relies on the meta-data of executable and library files. The Secunia PSI does not conduct an integrity check of the individual files, rather, it checks whether a specific program is vulnerable according to the reported version numbers and not whether the files have been compromised or replaced by other users or programs.

Once the Secunia PSI is installed the user should go to the Apps folder, press the Secunia PSI icon, and then press Scan now. If a vulnerable program is detected, the user will be provided with a link to the latest secure version in the Android Store (Google Play), from where it can be easily downloaded and installed.

Once a scan is completed, the Results overview screen displays the status of the programs installed. The user can press any icon in the Results overview screen to view the program's version, security rating and the time since the last update was performed.

To allow for constant protection against vulnerabilities, the Secunia PSI should be set to perform a Scheduled daily scan so that newly installed programs are always detected, patched and kept secure. Scheduled daily scans are enabled by default but can be disabled in the Settings menu.
